GetThere

GetThere is a popular web-based travel booking tool that global corporations, government agencies, and nonprofits use to help employees book trips while reducing travel costs. The application has a SaaS-based architecture and is a worldwide tool available in 16 languages. GetThere offers more than 3,000 configurable site options.

My Role

Lead Designer: I was appointed full design ownership over this product

Problem

The airline industry started to adopt a new data standard called NDC, allowing for more normalized data across carriers. The GetThere product needed to incorporate New Distribution Capability(NDC) data to keep up with and ensure relevancy.

Scope

NDC solved Saber Red Workspace’s Branded Fares issue. As a result, I was tasked with redesigning GetThere’s fare booking workflow and incorporating a new Branded Fare comparison UI.

Solution

Since each column in the table represents a different brand name from multiple airlines, the decision was made not to assign labels to the columns. Instead, an arbitrary value that scales from low to high was used.

Design & Stakeholder Relationship

The feature leveraged a new service being developed by Sabre Labs. As the first application to integrate the service, I collaborated closely with the Labs team, multiple Product Owners, and Product Managers.

Quantifying The User Experience

As the design owner of the project, I aimed to establish a structure for UX project documentation and collaboration. Visualizing the steps is the most effective way to change habits. To achieve this, I created a graphic that helps my design team use our product management software efficiently while creating a process record for future designers. This will enable them to start their work quickly and smoothly.

Building A Flexible IA

While designing the UI, the IA faced multiple challenges that had to be overcome.

  • Combining data “buckets” of band attributes from different airlines with varying groupings of values was necessary.

  • For data normalization, I created a system that equated the number of fare attributes available in a brand with its corresponding "bucket" level in an arbitrary branded fare hierarchy.

NDC Branded Fares Selection

By integrating the new NDC data, we can design a workflow that displays brands from multiple airlines in a comparable “apple to apple” matrix.
